The Purpose of Human Creation
Bismillah
"Why Do We Live?"
Have you ever asked yourself that question, even when you were little? That was the question that used to cross my mind when I was little, maybe when I was still in kindergarten. At that time, I often asked myself, why am I here in this world? Why was I created and present in this world? What if I was not brought into the world, where or even did I exist? Aaah, it was a rhetorical question at that time, so I just kept it in my heart.
Until one day when I was in elementary school, I found an Islamic religious education subject, and it happened to be discussing monotheism. Yes, at that time I found an Islamic religious teacher who taught that:
"We were created by Allah to worship Allah".
MasyaAllah, I immediately felt like I had found the answer to a question that I had never been able to answer myself. My teacher even showed me a verse from the Qur'an that confirmed it. It is the Surah Adz Dzariyat verse 56 which reads:
"I did not create the jinn and humans except that they may worship Me."
I also just found out that not only humans, even jinns are also required to worship Allah. Finally, after finding out about this, I felt great happiness. Because then I know where the direction and purpose of my life is.
Continuing in middle school, high school and finally college, I understood more and more about the religion of Islam. Apart from worshiping Allah, we as humans are also commanded by Allah to be caliphs on earth. The basis is the 30th verse of the Qur'an Surah Al Baqarah which reads:
"And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, 'Indeed, I will make upon the earth a caliph (vicegerent)'."
Caliph means that humans are representatives or rulers on earth who are entrusted by Allah to manage and lead world life in accordance with His teachings and commands. These responsibilities include:
- Manage natural resources well and wisely.
- Maintaining environmental and ecosystem sustainability.
- Developing science and technology for the advancement of mankind.
- Upholding justice, equality, and truth in society.
- Practicing Islamic moral and ethical values in daily life.
Third, our duty to live on this earth is to study Islamic knowledge/religion and practice it in daily life, by spreading goodness and warning people to stay away from evil. This is based on the Qur'an, Surah Al Imran, verse 104, which reads:
"And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful."
All the goodness that we spread is ultimately for ourselves too, namely to be able to achieve His pleasure, so we should totally and sincerely walk on the path that He wants.
So, now that we know what we were created for, let's start from now on, let's never get tired of improving ourselves for the better. As long as there is still time, as long as there is still breath, it means that Allah is still giving us the opportunity to do as much good deeds as possible, so don't be lazy! Don't just stay silent and wait for guidance to come, go get guidance.
